Interior lighting has always played an important part in the history of the United Kingdom. For long, the various dukes and lords have used such lighting as gifts for gaining in favour with neighboring allies. People here have always been known to be appreciators of fine arts, when it came to choosing the lighting features for their homes.
While the manors and castles of the country side still contain massive chandeliers and wall lightings, it is the cities that have gone through a modern lighting revolution of sorts. Instead of the traditional designs, they are now installing contemporary wall lights that contain a mixture of classical and modern designs, and all this often in the form of ceiling downlights.
1. The best possible light effects can be brought about with the use of both accent and ambient lights in synchronization with each other.
2. If an area of the room has sufficient access to sunlight, then a small source for ambient light is the best choice. This will provide brighter illumination and will be pleasing to look at as well.
3. Chandeliers have lost their sheen, purely because of their size and the area they take up. Instead, recessed downlights should be used, as they provide a sleek and subtle look to the room and also makes it look spacious.
4. Spotlights are another lighting source than can provide a magnificent view. They can be made to focus on paintings or decorative pieces to attract attention towards them.
5. Fluorescent lights, PLC lights and halogen bulbs can be used to provide soothing ambient brightness, instead of traditional bulbs, which tend to get too bright.
6. Instead of adding lamps to the living room, you can opt for portable lamps or pendant style lights to provide task oriented lighting.
7. Instead of using thick curtains or shutters in the house, you can use screens of paper or other fabric, which will allow some of the sunlight to creep through. This diffused light can help create a very calming atmosphere in the whole living space.
The British kitchens are no longer simple places where the food is prepared. The modern houses use it as a place for the family to hang out while the food is being prepared, or as a space for children to finish up their school work. This has made lighting a very important parameter for such spaces.
The first task here is to identify which area of the kitchen needs high illumination and where normal lighting will do. For instance, an energy conserving fluorescent bulb fitted in the ceiling downlights will do just fine over the cooking area, while a series of track lights will provide enough illumination for proper functioning of the sink area.
For the breakfast area of the kitchen, a good ambient light source is recommended, possibly a good quality ceiling downlight, which will also provide enough illumination for the area to double up as a reading space. Other possible options include ‘high tech flexible track lighting’ and ‘decorative pendants.’ Some people even use pendants with suspenders and dimmers to use the kitchen area for entertainment purposes as well.
Bathroom downlights are light sources that are either recessed completely or partially in the bathroom ceiling. They are preferred over other alternatives because they entail the least threat as an electrical safety hazard. They can be used in various orientations in the bathroom space so as to produce a beautiful effect with the water present in the bathroom.
These recessed downlights are fitted either completely or partially in the ceiling of the bathroom, and provide illumination while staying hidden from direct vision.
