At some point in all of our lives, there will come a time when we need to use hand tools to perform those necessary DIY tasks at home. At the same time, every year AandE departments are flooded with accidental injuries from such occasions, from the negligence and caviller attitude many have towards using hand tools.
Those who don’t take safety measures seriously, or use the wrong tools for a job, do so at their own peril, because this is an all too common way to find yourself adding to those AandE statistics. If you’d like to take precautions and look after your safety but don’t know how, then read below for some tips on using hand tools safely.
Use a hand tool for the job it was made to perform
It’s no use using a screwdriver to ply up floorboards, or a hand saw when an electric one is clearly required. Don’t use the handle of a screwdriver as a striking tool just because you can’t find your hammer. This is certain to cause problems and lead to injuries. If you don’t have the right tools for the job, wait until you have bought them or borrowed them from a friend. Don’t think you can make do with what you have as your safety is on the line if you’re reckless with DIY tools.
Use safety equipment
Invest in items such as a hard helmet, and safety goggles to maximise your safety while completing tasks. Protective gloves can help while using gardening tools, and if you don’t have a good light source, be sure to have someone hold a torch so you can see what you’re doing.
Remember to concentrate on what you’re doing! It sounds obvious, but all too many people use dangerous tools while holding a conversation, or with something on the television in the background. Concentrate on what you’re doing and minimise distractions. Similarly, keep small children away from the area in case they run and knock you while using a tool.
Storing and cleaning a tool
Switch the tools to the off position and lock it, or better still, take out the batteries when it’s not in use. Be sure not to leave a tool plugged in that you will be coming back to use later as it can all too easily be knocked to the on position. When tools are in use don’t use them near flammable liquids.
Plan the job before you start
Don’t start the job without a plan, or having the tools you will be to hand. Before you start check for hidden hazards, such as damaged tools, or electric wires in a wall. Position your body securely while working with the tool. If you need to stand on a ladder, get someone to hold it at the bottom, particularly if you’ll be at the top using a tool such as a petrol hedge trimmer or electric drill. The last thing you want is to fall while in the possession of these sorts of tools.
